I will be doing 4 blogs – one blog every week for the next 4 weeks – on 4 wonderful & my favorite weekend getaways from Bangalore.
I always wanted to write on my favorite weekend destinations; but kept postponing it for no reasons. But quite a lot of my readers urged me recently to write on weekend getaways from Bangalore in depth. Bloggers do not need much persuasion to blog & I am no exception either.
So dear readers; I will be hosting 4 blogs in the next 4 Sundays starting from the coming one. The chosen 4 weekend destinations are given below:-
- Wayanad – Hill Station & Wildlife
- Coorg – Hill Station & Wildlife
- Kabini – Riverfront & Wildlife
- Mysore – Historical & Leisure
My main worry is whether am I writing too much? Blogs are not weekly tabloids & are not meant to be written every week.
I remember the famous saying of Aravind Adiga (Indian-Australian English Writer) & reproduce it below:-
“Too much of Indian writing in English, it seemed to me, consisted of middle-class people writing about other middle-class people – and a small slice of life being passed off as an authentic portrait of the country.”
My second worry is whether I am passing off my opinion, interests & experiences as the true picture of my chosen destinations. I am certainly not trying to do this & just sharing my personal experiences & opinion with my dear readers. Nothing more than this.
The prelude to my blog has become too long without me being aware of it & it is imperative now that I start writing about the chosen weekend destination for this week – Wayanad.
Wayanad is a hill station in North Kerala, a jewel in God’s own country – Kerala. Nature reigns here & is at its best. Wayanad literally means “the land of paddy fields”. This land is rich in natural wonders, history & tradition. Its vast expanse of greenery, spice scented breeze, mist capped hills, salubrious climate & the hypnotizing beauty dazzle all visitors.
Scaling Edakkal caves & Chembra peak will delight all trekkers. Chembra peak, in particular, will dare all trekkers, a true trekker’s paradise.
Kuruwa Dweep, Soochipara & Meenmutty Waterfalls, Pookot Lake are few of the unblemished water spots in Wayanad. Rafting, boating, angling, swimming & exotic birds watching could all be done here.
Wayanad’s two wildlife sanctuaries – Tholpetty & Muthunga – share borders with Nagarahole, Bandipur & Mudumalai sanctuaries. These reserves are home to Tigers, Leopards, Elephants, Gaurs, Sambars, Deers & many more. A true treat to our animal loving patrons.
Camping out at nights is another joyful option that will delight all our nature loving & adventurous patrons.
Wayanad is a true paradise on earth. Unlike other popular destinations; it is not yet commercially exploited & nature is still at its best. Wayanad is a land of coffee, tea & spices. Almost every crop such as Coffee, Pepper, Ginger, Cocoa, Arecanut, Tea, Rubber, Vanilla etc are grown here. Wayanadan Pepper is famous in the world of Spices.
Another chief attraction in Wayanad is “URAVU” – a non-governmental organization registered under the Indian Trusts Act. Uravu works with people, governments and private businesses as a development partner. It is an institution in the making. Uravu works mainly with bamboo, the “Green Gold,” the “resource of the 21st Century,” and implements end-to-end programs in the bamboo sector.
The focus of Uravu is on developing bamboo processing skills among rural women through training programs and introduction of appropriate tools, technologies and processes.
The master craftsperson at Uravu have undergone trainers’ training in various institutions including the Bamboo Studio, IIT-Mumbai, Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre (CBTC), and National Institute of Design (NID).
You get here excellent handicrafts made out of Bamboo at unbelievable prices. A MUST VISIT IN WAYANAD.
LEISURE OR ADVENTURE HOLIDAY, HEAD TO WAYANAD
Accessibility from Bangalore
Wayanad can be accessed from Bangalore by road only & Kapetta, the district headquarter of Wayanad, is just 280 kms. or 6 hour drive from Bangalore.
Bangalore – Mysore – Nanjangud – Gundlupet – Sulthan Bathery – Kalpetta (district headquarter of Wayanad)
Mysore is the mid-point to Wayanad from Bangalore. Kalpetta is nearly 280 kms. from Bangalore.
It is NH212 all the way through from Mysore to Wayanad & hence after Mysore, please do not deviate from NH 212. National Highway 212 connects Mysore & Calicut. Kalpetta is 72 kms. before Calicut.
When you reach Gundlupet, which is 65 kms. from Mysore, you get a deviation. The left takes you to Ooty & the right to Wayanad.
Right time to visit Wayanad
You can visit Wayanad throughout the year – all 365 days are right time to visit Wayanad depending on what you wish to do & what are your interests.
April to June is comparatively hotter than other months; but the temperature does not exceed 28 Celsius even in the afternoons – the hottest period of the day.
It is monsoon from mid-June to September & Wayanad is delightful during monsoon – particularly for those who love rains. I am one of those who loves rains & always visit Wayanad in either July or August. Imagine yourself sitting with a book or a magazine in the balcony of your room in the resort with a steaming cup of coffee or even better; with a mug of chilled beer & watching rain pouring incessantly or playing hide and seek with you. Life can’t get better than that.
It is wonderful to visit Wayanad from October to February. The weather will be pleasant; lot of greenery around; all water bodies will be overflowing & is a glorious sight to behold. Winter is also the ideal time for adventure activities.
